‘Clotilde Soupert’ reminds us of the Bourbon rose, ‘Souvenir de la Malmaison,’ only smaller. The flower is a rounded, cabbagey rose of creamy white with the very palest touches of pink in the center of its 100 petals which enfold its fine perfume. The compact growth habit and exquisite bloom make up for the tendency to ball in humid weather.

This fine old rose has velvety, rich crimson flowers with a silvery reverse and a deliciously fruity fragrance. The double, cupped form of the blossoms is distinctive, keeping with the rounded shape even when fully open. Like all true Chinas, it is very nearly everblooming in a warm climate. The leaves are small, neatly shaped, dark green, and very healthy. The plant has an upright habit and, if left unpruned, will slowly grow to over five feet tall and equally wide. 'Cramoisi Superieur' or 'Agrippina', as it is sometimes still called, is one of the old roses that can often be found in country gardens of Texas and the South. It is a valuable and beautiful landscape plant that provides almost continuous color.

This healthy but thorny climber was previous sold by us as 'Colonial White.’ The creamy white blooms of 'Sombreuil' are very large, flat, and quartered, with a most delicious Tea fragrance. The plant is reportedly free from mildew. This mannerly climber is ideally suited for use as a pillar rose, or training on a low wall, fence, or trellis. This is the perfect rose to include in your "night" garden design.

‘Peace’ crossed with ‘Independence’ produced this cherry red rose with the old-fashioned name. We are not sure why 'Dame de Coeur' dropped out of commerce, as it is healthy and free-blooming with large, double, very fragrant flowers that last well on the bush and in vases. The color is strong but mixes quite well in the landscape with older varieties of roses. This rose is also known as "The Black Rose," as the cherry-red coloration darkens to a crimson as it ages.

Fully double flowers of apricot pink fading to cream grace this medium-sized shrub or pillar rose. 'Felicia' is very generous with her blooms which have one of the most intense fragrances in its class, making it an excellent cut flower. Luscious, sumptuous, almost blousy beauty, runs one description of this well-known old rose. Named after the wife of a French banker, 'Madame Isaac Pereire' has fat, cabbagey flowers of rich rose madder, with perhaps the strongest deep rose perfume extant. To see and smell a full blown bush on an early April morning is a heady experience. A smaller but even more lovely fall display and scattered roses throughout the summer are extra rewards that come as the plant gets established. 'Mme. Isaac Pereire' makes a handsome shrub specimen for pegging.

We have seen this versatile and handsome rose used as a border, pot plant, specimen, or low hedge. Sweetly-shaped, pale pink buds unfold to creamy white, semi-double flowers of delicious fragrance. 'Marie Pavie' is sure to be a favorite with all who grow it. It is almost constantly in bloom and the wonderful scent permeates the garden on warm days. The foliage is a dark, rich, healthy green and the thornless stems of 'Marie Pavie' make this rose an outstanding landscape plant.

Both this rose and R. multiflora carnea were painted by Redouté in France and both are frequently found in early Texas gardens. By the effort that it took to transport them through the intervening miles, those early settlers have left their own testimony about the need for beauty in even the most rugged human existence. ‘Seven Sisters’ is named for the variety of colors that can appear in each cluster of flowers, ranging from carmine through purple, mauve, pink, and cream as the flowers fade.

'Crawfish Étouffée’ is a special rose that resulted from hybridizing two award-winning and fragrant parents, the Meilland rose ‘Dee-Lish’ and the David Austin rose ‘Lady of Shallot’. The inspiration for the name came from our breeder Andrew, as he is from Southern Louisiana. The color is a unique red with hints of russet orange and resembles boiled crawfish in appearance. The fragrance is fittingly floral and spicy, and the foliage is reminiscent of bay leaves, which are an essential ingredient in Cajun cuisines. Combined together, the overall effect will take your senses to the New Orleans French Quarter, where sounds of traditional Jazz music and smells of good cookin’ fill the air.

The growth habit of 'Crawfish Étouffée' strongly resembles ‘Lady of Shallot’ with loose, informal, and graceful architecture when fully established. If we consider the parentage of ‘Crawfish Étouffée’, ‘Dee-Lish’ is cold hardy to zone 5a, and ‘Lady of Shallot’ has been reported to be cold hardy to zone 4 in Finland. Therefore, we assume that ‘Crawfish Étouffée’ will be cold hardy to at least zone 5. ‘Crawfish Étouffée’ blooms from Spring until frost throughout the season and possesses the disease resistance of its parent ‘Dee-Lish’.

'The Fairy' has a lush, spreading shape that will soften any angle. The small, bright green, shiny leaves and the clustered sprays of little, very double pink roses are on display throughout the growing season, although Summer sun fades the flowers to blush white. Massed to create a statement or allowed to gracefully cascade over the edge of flower beds, this rose will be treasured for its versatility. This is one of the best summer blooming roses.

 Also known as "Common Monthly", "Common Blush China", "Old Pink Daily", "Old Pink Monthly", and "Parsons Pink China", the myriad of names of this semi-double hybrid of R. chinensis attest to the friendly familiarity with which it has been grown for over two hundred years. One of the most common of old roses, it is also one of the most valuable, for it has passed on its incredible blooming prowess to countless cultivars during the history of hybridization in the West. 'Old Blush' has medium, semi-double, lilac pink flowers in loose clusters. They flush darker pink in the sun and are followed by large orange hips. It blooms so steadily that it is not a very good cut flower: the blossoms drop quickly to make room for their successors. The bush is full and upright in habit, growing slowly to over 5 feet, with neat, healthy foliage. Perfume is soft, but fruity and pleasant. Whether used in a hedge (which can be spectacular), as a specimen, or in a border, 'Old Blush' should be treated simply as a flowering shrub and not fussed over.

‘Valentine’s’ long pointed buds open to velvety, semi-double flowers of rich scarlet that can be 3 or 4 inches across on a mature plant. The nearly thornless bush is slightly open. The foliage is very full and rich and is rarely affected by heat, humidity, insects, or disease. This is a rose grown for show and will attract considerable attention. ‘Valentine’ is one of our most popular red roses.

We discovered our favorite found rose "Katy Road Pink" was in fact 'Carefree Beauty.' Forming an open, but extremely graceful bush, 'Carefree Beauty' appears to have few insect or disease problems and is not particular about soil or growing conditions. It is free blooming, probably one of the most floriferous pink roses that we grow, with new buds appearing all the time. Large hips are a nice treat!

'Mother of Pearl' is the rose that comes to mind when thinking of a beautiful bridal bouquet of soft pinkish-apricot flowers.  The slightly fragrant blooms are large and make them ideal for cutting.  The bushy shrub can reach four feet and is known to be disease resistant especially to black spot.  This rose is perfect for the garden despite the delicate appearance of the flowers.  Plant it, cut it, enjoy it!

Peter Harkness describes this rose as "one of the most popular and widely admired roses, and certainly the best known white Floribunda." ‘Iceberg’s’ lovely- shaped, clustered blooms of white may appear light pink in the cooler months and are wonderful for cutting. The bush is well rounded and is used frequently for hedging. After witnessing this rose’s performance in the garden, we can understand why it is a design staple.

Only the best was good enough to be named after the wife of famous rose breeder and nurseryman, Benjamin Cant. This fat, full, cabbagey flower is a silver rose color with a dark rose reverse. The rich, cool fragrance is a treat, but the bush requires a little extra space; we have seen specimens reach 8 feet in every direction if they are not pruned. 'Mrs. B. R. Cant' is a steady bloomer and a superb cut flower.

A mild confusion surrounds this rose since it is apparently the same plant that was also sold much later under the name 'Jacques Cartier'. 'Marchessa Boccella' is in constant bloom for us, one of the few members of the class to justify the "perpetual" in its name. The delicate pink flowers are flat, petal-crowded confections that sit in clusters of three atop healthy, jade green foliage.  Its heavy damask scent is why we always recommend this rose for fragrance gardens.
